About this Site

Hey there. Ranger Sheck here – welcome to my house.

I’ll be discussing all kinds of stuff related to gaming, especially indie, casual, browser-based, and Linux-based gaming. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to talk about game development a little bit, from the perspective of a PBBG developer.

Who is Ranger Sheck?

I’m the alter ego of a young boy who was born 30-some years ago with a Pong paddle in his hands and currently parades around his living room with his Wii remote gesticulating wildly.

My real name is Jason LaPier. In real life, I’m an IT sap. My techie blog focuses on my current inorganic infatuations, Linux and Ruby on Rails.

In my spare time, I homebrew (as in beer), pose with a guitar I used to play, pose in front of turntables I used to play, dabble in a little writing, do a lot of reading, and play a-god-damn-lot of video games.

I’m a real half-assed do-it-yourself type. One time, I replaced my own water heater. I even brought the 40 gallon bastard home in the back of my VW Scirocco. But I didn’t even take the old one out of the basement. I paid some guy $5 to come and haul it off so he could recycle the metal. So that’s the kind of thing we’re talking about here. Basically, I start a lot of projects and never finish them. I like to blame this phenomenon on lack of time.

Sometime at the beginning of 2006, I started writing a web-based roleplaying game in Ruby on Rails. Actually, a couple years before that, I started to do a web-based RPG in PHP and didn’t get very far, despite spending many, many hours. But when I started getting into Rails, I felt like I could actually get somewhere with my game. Now, a little over a year later, written completely in my spare time, I present Pioneers of Aethora.

Recently, I’ve taken a renewed interest in the gaming homebrew scene, so I decided to start this blog.

Also, I’d just like to say, if you ever feel bad about being a 30+ year old boy who still wants to play games all the time, my advice to you is ask a girl to marry you. Having a fiancee is totally license to be a full-on geek for life.
